National Leaders of Education
Brian R Hooper
Successful Head Teacher / National Leader of Education (2007) that has led several schools from either Notice to Improve or Special Measures to Good or Outstanding.
I led Tregonwell Academy to an Outstanding judgement in all categories in 2013. I was CEO of the Ambitions Academies Trust which consists of five academies covering all educational sectors (primary, secondary, special) and a large Alternative Provision (PRU) for the most vulnerable pupils. As a National Leader of Education, I provide support and challenge to several schools in Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset and wider areas.
I also work with the National College for Teaching and Leadership in developing its leadership programmes. I have provided advice to the DfE and directly to senior Ministers and two Secretaries of State on systems leadership.
In 2012 I was invited to become Executive Head Teacher (along with my role as EHT at Tregonwell Academy) of Queen’s Park Junior School, which had been placed in special measures. In nine months it was removed from special measures and graded good with outstanding features. The school subsequently joined the Ambitions Academies Trust as Queen’s Park Academy.

Alistair Brien has been Headteacher of Bournemouth School for Girls for the last 10 years. In October 2012 the school was judged to be ‘outstanding’ in all categories by OFSTED. In July 2013 Alistair was designated a National Leader of Education.
Previously he has worked in a range of grammar and comprehensive schools both in pastoral and curricular posts. His own subject specialism is modern languages and he has written a number of textbooks for both Oxford University Press and Heinemann.
Alexandra is Director of Primary Education at Ambitions Academies Trust. She has led whole school initiatives to ensure robust and sustainable improvements to leadership structures, pupil achievement and teaching and learning, which has led to Queen’s Park Academy being one of the most rapidly improving schools in Bournemouth in 2012 with some of the highest results in Bournemouth in 2013.
She leads CPD training on a wide range of leadership and management areas and has devised, implemented and continually models a highly effective coaching and mentoring package to rapidly move teaching to good and outstanding. She currently supports other schools’ leadership teams with data management to support pupils’ achievement, teaching and learning and rapid whole school improvements.
Sian Thomas is a National Leader of Education and the CEO of Ambitions Academies Trust. The goal of the NLE is to increase the leadership capacity of other schools to help raise standards.
She has over 30 years of experience in schools, having taken roles in Secondary mainstream schools from Head of Year, Head of Faculty and Senior Leadership. Sian then moved into senior leadership within special education, becoming Principal of Tregonwell Academy. She held this position when the Academy was designated Outstanding. Sian then moved back into mainstream and became Principal of St Aldhelm’s Academy in Poole. The school was in special measures when she took up the Principal role and took it from this Ofsted category to Good in 9 months. She then took up the CEO role of Ambitions Academies Trust in January 2017.
Local Leaders of Education
Jon is the Director of Secondary Education and a local Leader of Education. He is a proud member of the teaching profession and has spent the last twelve years in senior leadership. Jon is a member of the senior leadership team which ensured that OFSTED removed St Aldhelm’s Academy out of special measures to good in just under a year. Jon’s experience ranges from developing pastoral systems, teaching and learning, leadership development and securing accountability in a positive and principled way.
Sarah Rempel is the Principal of Manorside Academy, currently the only Outstanding primary school in Poole. Sarah is a Local Leader of Education and specialises in Systems Leadership and SEND. She has nearly 20 years of experience working in education, across all years in primary school and secondary too. Sarah is a qualified SENCo and was previously the head of a unit for children with SEMH difficulties in mainstream settings.
With a particular interest in Systems Leadership, Coaching, SEND (Provision Development) and Person Centred Approaches, James has been part of the Ambitions Academies trust since 2014. Having begun his career as a Teaching Assistant and an Early Years practitioner, James has worked within the Specialist Sector of Education since 2003, with over a decade of leadership experience in the Specialist Sector.
James is the Principal of Nigel Bowes Campus (part of Tregonwell Academy). Nigel Bowes is a Specialist SEMH / ASD provision for Primary and Secondary pupils, maintaining and extending outstanding in our December 2017 Ofsted inspection.

Specialist Leaders of Education
Specialist leaders of education (SLEs) are outstanding middle or senior leaders who have the skills to support individuals or teams in similar positions in other schools. They understand what leadership practice in their area of expertise looks like, and are skilled in helping other leaders to achieve it in their own context. The SLE role helps improve the quality of school leadership through school to school support and peer to peer learning, ultimately raising standards and improving outcomes for children.
The Ambitions Teaching School has several SLEs in place who can be deployed to your school should you require support in developing your leaders in their areas of expertise. Please see the SLE Profiles for further information about the support they can offer.
Leigh is the Principal at the Tregonwell Academy, leading two of three sites (Petersfield Campus and the Throop Learning Centre). Leigh has strategically lead behaviour across key stages 1-4 for the academy and work collaboratively with other schools within our multi-academy trust.
Leigh has experience of leading and teaching in a highly challenging environment, teaching pupils across KS 1-4 with complex, challenging behaviour driven by a range of emotional, social and mental health difficulties.
He is a trained coach, supporting teachers, teams and leaders in developing effective whole school behaviour approaches, but also seeking solutions to behavioural challenges of individuals or groups of pupils.
Matt is Principal at Bayside Academy in Poole. His previous role as Vice Principal at QPA included responsibilities for primarily for achievement, including assessment and outcomes, and the academy’s curriculum provision. Matt has previously held a variety of middle leadership positions, including head of year two, and has taught all year groups across the primary sector within his teaching career.

Sarah is Vice Principal at King’s Park Academy, part of the Ambitions Academy Trust. She leads on teaching and learning and personal development, behaviour and welfare across the primary school.
Having lead and taught in Reception for 5 years, Sarah’s biggest passion is the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). She is a Local Authority Early Years Moderator for Bournemouth and has worked with a number of schools to improve their early years practise and outcomes. She has an excellent knowledge of the EYFS Framework including how to assess children through effective observations of their play, analysing data to set targets/next steps and developing an effective early years classroom.
While supporting her own and other schools to improve standards in teaching and learning, Sarah has coached leaders to conduct rigorous work and planning scrutinies and has quality assured lesson observation judgements with staff and SLT.
Andrea is an outstanding teacher at Manorside Academy, part of the Ambitions Academy Trust. Having lead and taught in Reception for four years, Andrea’s biggest passion is the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). She is Principal Lead of EYFS across the Trust and has worked with numerous schools to improve their Early Years’ practice and outcomes across Bournemouth and Poole. She has an extensive knowledge and understanding of early child development having worked in Nurseries and other childcare settings before becoming a teacher. With this experience she supports others in how to assess children through effective observations of their play, adapting teaching to be inclusive of every child’s needs, analysing data and tracking key groups and developing an effective Early Year’s environment.
Lucy is the Assistant Vice Principal of St Aldhelm’s Academy. She is a member of the extended leadership team which ensured that OFSTED removed St Aldhelm’s Academy out of special measures to good in just under a year. Her expertise is in leading learning and teaching. She has built robust monitoring systems, created INSET training to maximise student progress and developed an explicit learning and teaching brand which encapsulates simple yet effective strategies to ensure learning and teaching remains at the heart of St Aldhelm’s Academy. As an outstanding teacher Lucy is passionate about school improvement and finding ways to ensure excellence is achieved for all.
Adele is Vice Principal at Queen’s Park Academy, she joined QPA in 2013 as a class teacher and was Head of Year 6 for 5 years. Her main areas of experience and expertise are assessment in KS2, attainment and progress, closing the gap and interventions. With this experience, she has supported staff across the Ambitions Academies Trust with teaching and learning. Previous to this, Adele trained and taught in Birmingham for the first five years of her career, specialising in maths, and including work within inner city schools.
Graham Exon is an experienced school governor in both the maintained and independent sectors. He is Chairman of the Governing Body at Talbot Heath Independent Girls School (ages 3 to 18) and Chair of Governors at St Michael’s Primary CE (VC) School, Bournemouth. He is currently working with Bournemouth Septenary Trust as their seven primary schools progress towards academy conversion. He also chairs Bournemouth Schools’ Forum and sits on admission appeal panels. Graham is designated a National Leader of Governance and has worked with academies and schools in both primary and secondary phases. Concentrating on school improvement, he has provided external reviews of governance, governor training as well as coaching and mentoring of Chairs. Following a successful career in banking Graham was appointed Chair of the Board of Bournemouth Churches Housing Association establishing the ‘BCHA Group’ of related companies/charities. He has served as a non-executive director on the boards of a number of local companies. His main qualifications and experience are in financial management and corporate governance. As a keen musician, he is Director of Music for the parish of St John with St Michael, Bournemouth. Graham Exon 01202 524 333 07769 318 714
